Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of files that included little previously unseen data.
