Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
