Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official said the incident made him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
